Mananasi
We had an unforgettable experience with this exceptional crop, which has become an icon at Soil Roastery. This crop comes from an altitude of 1900 meters above sea level, in fertile land ideal for coffee cherry cultivation in Uganda, specifically in the Kinza Kianza district.
The story of Mananasi began when the “Great Lakes Coffee” team launched a unique social experiment to improve coffee quality. The team chose a region known for low-quality Arabica coffee sold at a low price compared to other Ugandan regions. They developed a special training program for farmers, where a lead farmer receives intensive agricultural engineering and processing training. Each lead farmer is assigned 35 smallholder farmers, who are rewarded financially based on quality: the better the coffee, the higher the group’s reward. The lead farmer receives an additional bonus for the extra training provided to peers, ensuring efficient knowledge transfer. Red Cherry Program
This program represents the next phase of gradual quality improvement over recent years. It focuses on quality first and foremost, guiding farmers to pick only ripe cherries, dry coffee on raised beds, and, after full drying, send it to the processing station where any defects are removed to ensure a clean and pristine cup of coffee.
